PENNSYLVANIA STAR BARN

I do believe this has to be the most wonderful site in all our travels we have taken over the years...

Last Spring on a trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania we stopped and took some pictures of a beautiful old barn.

We have traveled this route for 30 years and seen this wonderful piece of architecture and never gotten off the highway to visit it, but after hearing it will be re-located we thought it was time to visit this wonderful beauty.

Over the years it has taken a hit with wood decay and shoddy upkeep and was due to be demolished if someone didn’t come forward to save it.

Fortunately enough funds have been raised and has been purchased and all buildings will be taken apart board by board, stone by stone, numbered and re-assembled in their new location sometime this year.

Here is the video clip of the announcement and new location http://www.wgal.com/video/16764868/index.html

Go to this site to read about this beautiful piece of architecture. http://www.thestarbarn.com/About_OwnershipHistory.aspx

On February 29, 2000, the Millport Conservancy and Preservation Pennsylvania joined forces and funds to purchase The Star Barn Complex. The two organizations shared common goals in moving to save this endangered property: to preserve The Star Barn complex as a symbol of the region’s agricultural heritage and to insure its future survival by making it a part of the life of the communities that now surround it.

In December, 2007, Agrarian Country, a non-profit corporation from Middletown, Pennsylvania, assumed ownership of The Star Barn. AND SHE WILL BE SAVED!!!

What a wonderful old barn and thanks for someone caring enough to preserve it.
By growing up in the country, I always loved old buildings and especially old barns. I've always thought that I would love living in an old house. As I grow older, the old structures mean so much to me.. i love collecting pictures of old buildings.
Thanks for sharing these precious pictures with us.

    Blessings,

  4. What a wonderful barn. We were in Lancaster last spring too and then overnight the end of May coming back for Cooperstown, NY. Planning to go back to Lancaster this spring. I used to go up on a bus group with group from church back in the early 80's each fall. I just love that area...so interested in the Amish lifestyle, fabric shopping and outlet shopping. Country side with all the beautiful farms, barns, covered bridges....just love all of it.

  8. What a great story to know such a precious piece of history will be saved. All over New England and up and down the east cost, old barns are falling into disrepair as farms are sold to developers or farm families can barely feed themselves, never mind keep up old barns. It is so sad to see that happen. Thanks for sharing that good news!!

  14. That is so awesome. I am so glad you got to visit the barn. I just love Americana and when we were living in New England a few years ago I would never get on the interstate to go anywhere. I loved taking the the backroads to soak up the sights and stop and take pics. Thanks for sharing this beautiful barn.

  20. Oh what beautiful architecture on those barns! They are a work of art among themselves. Isn't it amazing how they can take something like that apart and turn around and put it back together stone by stone and board by board by some ingenious numbering system? I'm so glad the building are going to be preserved for people to enjoy for years to come. You're so lucky to live near such beauty! Thanks for sharing this very interesting post.

  34. Hello Karen, my name is Randy Thomas and I actually lived on that farm in the mid to late 50's. Back then everything was pristine and I spent many hours with my brothers and sisters roaming the farm and playing in that barn's hayloft. Where you see the pond today is not where it orginally was, it use to be behind the house which is now a baseball field. It's always sad to me to see how the current owners of the property have let it run down but it cannot erase my memories of those days! Glad you liked it! :)
